Forecasting Convective Downburst Potential Using GOES Sounder Derived Products

چکیده

Page 5Pay attention to the “normal” landing path of an aircraft. In the case of a microburst, an aircraft will typically encounter a headwind that serves to slow and lift the nose of the aircraft above the normal landing path. A pilot may compensate for this condition by lowering the nose of the aircraft as it approaches the center of the downdraft core. Question: What problems may the pilot encounter by taking such a compensating action?

P 1 . 57 Goes Wmsi – Progress and Developments

A multi-parameter index has been developed to assess the magnitude of convective downbursts associated with heavy precipitation-producing, deep convective storm systems that occur over the central and eastern continental United States. The Wet Microburst Severity Index (WMSI) is composed of relevant parameters that represent the simultaneous physical processes of convective updraft development ...

Improvements and Applications of Atmospheric Soundings from Geostationary Platform

A unique feature of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) Sounder over the polar orbiting sounders is that it observes the atmosphere and the surface on an hourly basis with a nominal spatial resolution of 10 km. The temporally and spatially dense observations are of great importance for improving short-term weather forecasting or nowcasting. To further demonstrate how th...

High-Spectral- and High-Temporal-Resolution Infrared Measurements from Geostationary Orbit

The first of the next-generation series of the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) is scheduled for launch in 2015. The new series of GOES will not have an infrared (IR) sounder dedicated to acquiring high-vertical-resolution atmospheric temperature and humidity profiles. High-spectral-resolution sensors have a much greater vertical-resolving power of temperature, moistur...

Evaluation of the GOES-R ABI LAP Retrieval Algorithm Using the GOES-13 Sounder

A physical retrieval algorithm has been developed for deriving the legacy atmospheric profile (LAP) product from infrared radiances of the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) on board the next-generation Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-R) series. In this study, the GOES-R ABI LAP retrieval algorithm is applied to the GOES-13 sounder radiance measurements (termed the GOES-13 L...

Forecasting Convective Initiation by Monitoring the Evolution of Moving Cumulus in Daytime GOES Imagery

This study identifies the precursor signals of convective initiation within sequences of 1-km-resolution visible (VIS) and 4–8-km infrared (IR) imagery from the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) instrument. Convective initiation (CI) is defined for this study as the first detection of Weather Surveillance Radar-1988 Doppler (WSR-88D) reflectivities 35 dBZ produced by conv...
